And I re-read their stuff an embarrassing large number of times.

In no particular order:

Larry Niven
David Drake
Jerry Pournelle
Harry Turtledove
Robert Forstchen

Um, shit.

I've read and enjoyed Robert Heinlein (usually his teen stuff from the 50's), Arthur C. Clarke, Leo Frankowski, and probably a few others.
