...63% of Americans don't own guns at all, so how can their opinion on the matter be informed?

If you showed those 63% a picture of a rifle classified as an "assault weapon" (per 1993 federal ban) and a "sporting semiautomatic rifle" (also per the 1993 federal ban), would they really think the ban did anything? Would they really feel safer? Would they really think society is better served?

63% of the American people have this viewpoint, and they've never had it challenged by either research or practical experience.

"Assault weapon" is an arbitrary and pejorative term. If you, or any body else, is serious about trying to stop mass shootings or militaristic weapons culture, then you'd come out and simply ban semi-automatic long guns. All of them. No exceptions.

Lever action, okay. Bolt action, okay. Pump action, okay. Break-action, okay. But no self-loading long guns.

No AR-15s, no Garands, no AK-47s, no SKSs, no BARs, no 742s, no FALs, no Mini-14s...

Bolt, break, lever, pump.
