The original article didn't mention which military weapon he used. Since the M1 was the most common weapon in issue during the 50s, I made a broad assumption which turned out to be incorrect.
For the record, the M1 rifle is an eight-shot semi automatic that fires a round that will go through both sides of a kevlar vest - or an eight of an inch of plate steel. But it's not as threatening looking as most of what are considered assault weapons: no pistol grip, no detachable magazine, wood stock instead of polymer, etc.
