I think we should start putting far more attention on the larger closet, the walk in, nay, drive in closets of the vast American Straight Community....because when that closet door gets cracked open now and again it never really gets noticed as the closet it is. But every single married couple who are not exactly Ozzie and Harriet who do in fact pretend to be PTA Patty and her devoted Hubby are living closeted lives. The many straight politicians who put forward the wife and kids and say 'this is me' when they actually have a fetish for this or that, a mistress, a chest of adult costumes, these are closeted people.
I think the reason many straights fear the LGBT closet coming to an end is because they really like their closets. If we are open then will they have to admit to the toy room, the mink restraints, the trips to places where they 'let loose'? How can they face the kids if they can't pretend to be that which they are not?
I know a couple that swings like a saloon door, presents to the world as Mr and Mrs Just So, and that's fine, but they don't see that they are closeted, they think they are like super hipsters. They hide things in their home, no one is allowed in part of the house, they keep some friends away from other friends, they frequently lie about what they are doing, where they are going, why they are not attending, not big stuff, but we all know how that is...it's the closet.
And when found out, straights rarely take the moment, what they do is deny, then confess, claim repentance and return to the closet like beaten puppies. Just once I'd like to hear one of them say 'Yes, alright, those ARE my garters, and I'm ordering bespoke spike heels to go with them, now you all know, so tell me, how do I look in this skirt?'
Lots of people when 'outed' as gay just say 'Yes, yes, now you know, would you like to come to our wedding?' Few double down on the denial like the outed straight person.
Straights say 'I'm so sorry about the diapers, about my poor judgement, I have shamed my country, my God and my family' when they could say 'Yeah, I can see how the diaper thing seems strange, but look at my wife, she's a freak too, we are match made well, we have a few good friends with similar interests and really, so what?'
The real closet is the straight closet. They want us to remain in closets so that they can really hunker down in theirs.
