9. For politicians all the real enemies are in your own party

You may or may not like your opponents in the other parties but they are something you only have to face at elections. Your colleagues on your own benches are competing with you for influence, positions and safe constituencies all the time. Moreover, in the Conservative party this Darwinian conflict can become particularly brutal which is why they resort to 'leader sacrifice' so much more often than Labour.

As for Mensch she is pretty widely reviled by most of Tories now for cutting and running in the middle of the Parliament. She has left her party with an unwinnable by-election in Corby which will further weaken Cameron's position in the Commons. Political etiquette would have dictated that she should have held off until the General Election before going rather than legging it to a better job with Uncle Rupert at the first opportunity. The story about prince Harry is just a side issue. Mensch's whoring for the Murdoch press is the final straw for most Tories who will approve Dorries' comments even if they dont much like Dorries herself.
