Lummi councilman of the Lummi Tribal Business Council Jeremiah Julius will be speaking at the Peoples Movement Assembly tomorrow Saturday the 20th. He will talk against the Coal Terminal the rail companies want to put on sacred Lummi land at Cherry Point in Bellingham. He is part of the Environmental Justice panel that begins at 11:30AM Evergreen Lecture Hall. Contact info at bottom of email if you need directions.
There are many reasons to oppose the coal trains.. They would ship coal to China to add to global climate disruption when that coal would otherwise be left in the ground due to reduced U.S. coal demand. They coal dust from the trains would create major health problems for the communities through which the trains pass. The trains would run often enough to disrupt traffic and pose safety issues in the communities through which they pass. But in addition the location the coal chosen for the terminal has been sacred to the Lummi Nation for thousands of years. I'd compare it to tearing down a church to build a gas station, but that does not really capture how offensive this is.
In addition, the Lummi nation has legal treaty status which give them a much better chance of against the coal trains. They are providing important leadership on this issue, and if you care about stopping the coal trains you should come and hear Jeremiah Julius to find out how we can support the Lummi nation in this fight. The EJ panel has other members, but Jeremiah Julius will be given priority.
