I don't think the interior would ever get dry properly.

So surface cleaning seems to be the way to go. I think an aerosol carpet shampoo or upholstery shampoo is worth a try. Use a brush to scrub. Then I might use a wet washcloth for a going-over and finish with a hand-held hair dryer?
