Either one is going to change your life completely, in ways you probably haven't even thought about if you haven't already owned one.

Walk dogs from your local pound. They'll appreciate it and you'll get to know a bunch of dog personalities.

Cats are harder, but they vary as widely. We've had two cats that proved absolutely uninterested in human affection, one of whom would hunt deer, although ineffectively, as a kitten. That one tried car hunting, just once.
