1. According to the members of the band, this song started out

as a simple, short, plaintive song about the end of a love affair. I guess alcohol, LSD, and Morrison's poetic sensibilities swelled it into the resulting epic of familial lust and murder...

The opening sequence of Apocalypse Now is still one of the greatest first scenes in the history of film.
