I think it probably is medications or the lingering effects of them. It should wear off shortly. Still, that sort of thing can be frightening.
OK, I kid you not, try finding something you can take to bed as a "security blanket" of some form -- perhaps a stuffed animal. It sounds strange, but they used to do that with the patients in my grandmother's nursing home who had insecurity issues, and it helped. I got used to seeing some of the patients sleeping in chairs in the hallways or lounges clutching a bear or other stuffed animal.
