the "surprise" ending (what Young Joe does to himself) is supposed to mean that the little kid Sid will grow up NOT having witnessed his mom shot before his eyes, thus leaving us with the impression that he doesn't grow up to be the Evil Guy Rainmaker later. Is that how you figured it?
