....their purpose is to have fun just like all the other kids. This reminds me of the movie "Footloose." I say have 2 proms. One religious. And one non-religious. Then stand back and see which one the kids decide to go to. No, scratch that. Isn't it the Junior Class that sponsors the Prom for the Seniors? Have the Junior &/or the Senior class take a silent ballot vote. Majority wins and nobody whines after the vote. Everybody abides or just doesn't go to the prom. And tell the teacher to butt out.
