You've got to do some looking around, and see what the deal is. Not all of these things are completely in-patient.
Has he been convicted of a crime, yet?

What is your lawyer saying? "Take the deal, go and sin no more?" or is there even a strategy laid out?

Did the kid open his mouth and admit anything?

Are they offering a "rehab or jail/record" option?

I'm sorry for your troubles; I would make Junior take an after-school job and pay you back--every damn dime of it, even if you can afford the cost. You could secretly put what he gives you towards his tuition for later if you'd like, but it's a good lesson for him to have to feel the financial pain, and also to not be stupid at school.
