25. It appears to me to be the degree of enlightenment that checks the extremism of religious excesses.
The Founding Fathers of our Republic were men and I must add women of the age of Enlightenment who full well knew the dangers of rigid religious orthodoxy. They resisted every attempt by religious fundamentalists to restrict the rights of citizens by making church membership a compulsory condition of citizenship as had been attempted in numerous communities. For example it was the enlightenment that brought to an end the witch trials in which tens of thousands and up wards of estimates of millions perished. It was the Enlightenment that challenged the divine right of kings that had been sanctioned and bolstered by the religious establishment. Our Constitution is a bold expression of the concepts that challenged the very bases of European political order. The Founding Fathers were far ahead of the average citizen of their day and it has been a slow and painful process to enlighten the masses of society to these very basic concepts that are based on the concept of freedom of conscience rather than coercion to adhere to some rigid exclusive orthodoxy. They fully grasped just how radical was their declaration that Life, Liberty and Happiness were inherent rights and any attempt to impose restrictions on people that had been the norm for centuries by both the religious community and ruling class were to be restricted by a government that recognized the basic equality of all people. In many areas of the world this struggle is only in its infancy.
The attempt by Romney to seize the outbreak of radical religious extremism, more than any other of his shortcomings, is prima facie evidence that he is unworthy of leading our nation. He is engaging in crass demagoguery and exploitation that reveals he doesn't not have the qualities of a statesman. He little more than a second class rappel rouser that plays on prejudices og those who are yet unable to grasp the very essence of the foundation of our government.
