...to gather information about the asteroid/meteoroid.

Another post yesterday, http://www.democraticunderground.com/122816114, reported the findings of a couple researchers in Columbia who used video footage to estimate the trajectory of the object through the atmosphere and then did Monte Carlo simulations to compute a likely orbit.

Would be interesting to see how well the high tech and low(er) tech solutions match up.
