This piece, about Australia's Greens, is interesting because it points out the hazard of ignoring the slogan "All politics is local"

Here, the claim is that Greens elected to local city council positions, concentrated on abstract generic issues of no immediate local importance, instead of concentrating on local municipal issues, like potholes in the roads -- and for that reason suffered setbacks in the latest elections, losing support even from the people who generally agreed with them on big-picture issues
