graduate with majors in things that have practically no employment prospects?

I suppose a generation or two ago, such a small percentage of our population went to college that having a degree in anything meant that you were a better prospect than someone with just a high school education, but those days are gone. As a society, we've shoveled trillions of dollars, both from public and from private sources, into higher education without regard as to what the end game would look like, in a naive belief that all college educations are created equal.

If a prospective student found a college loan half as hard to get as a small business loan, we probably wouldn't have so many overeducated people trying to pay off student loans by jerking coffee at Starbucks.
