11. Those are capitalist democracies...
...not socialist dictatorships. The basic economics are capitalist and the means of production and wealth creation are in the hands of individuals who exchange goods and services in a market economy. Like in all capitalistic societies, the income that is produced is taxed to provide for government services. People are free to vote for policies that set the tax rates and that distribute tax income as they choose. And they can vote against those policies as well. When were there (meaningful) votes on basic issues like that in the USSR, or any other self-proclaimed socialist state?
I see by your avatar of your patron saint that you are a believer. I generally avoid insulting other peoples' religion, but, from time to time, I make an exception. So, for example, when I read about Islamic radicals calling for (and attempting) to murder cartoonists who draw pictures of Muhammed, I point out that this is a feature not a bug of Islam. Some see that as "insulting" - though it is quite remarkable how much "respect" you can generate by beheading a few blasphemers. Here, I make another exception. Every time the religion of Marxism is foisted upon a society it fails, and so it must be supported by force. What you see in North Korea, while extreme, is a feature, not a bug among the followers of Marx, who must rank as the most deluded religionists of all time. Most religions promise paradise in the hereafter, whereas Marxism promises it in the here and now or near future - always with disastrous results. Yet the devotees continue to believe. They are right up there Mormons who firmly believe that the civilizations of the New World were established by Judean colonists. In both cases, the facts are against them and yet they persist in asserting the reality of myth. The difference is that Mormons who believe in the historical reality of Zarahemla do no harm in doing so, whereas those who believe Marxist rubbish and have tried to implement it have caused a huge amount of suffering.
