(19,497 posts)51. This is a ridiculous argument. There's no constitutional requirement for deficit spending.
If the debt ceiling isn't raised then the only constitutional requirement is that the government cease borrowing additional money.
ETA -- some deficit spending isn't bad, i.e. infrastructure and social welfare. Not raising the debt ceiling could be economically catastrophic because it would be yanking too much money out of the economy too fast but it would not be unconstitutional.
