I think this is a template-building suit for the DoJ to go after Bank executives.

... participated in a scheme to ship what they knew were salmonella-contaminated peanuts and peanut products, misleading customers and putting them at risk.


That is the exact language that the DoJ used in describing the banks' actions in their settlements. But with the adding of "... he and three other company officials ..." in a criminal indictment, this may very well be a test case to determine where the rocks are, if the DoJ were to indict higher ups in the banking industry that did essentially the same thing "participated in a scheme to ship what they knew to be toxic mortgage products."

If this prosecution goes well, the next couple of months after this trial ought to be very interesting.
