9. "Nuclear Test Detected" in North Korea (UN)

A United Nations Security Council diplomat says there has been a nuclear test in North Korea after seismic activity was detected in the country's north-east.

Pyongyang has been threatening a nuclear test for weeks, despite warnings of severe repercussions from the UN Security Council.

South Korean officials said a 4.9-magnitude tremor was detected just before midday local time, but they are almost certain it was not an earthquake.

"We've been informed by the South Koreans that there's been a (North Korean) nuclear test," a UN Security Council diplomat said on condition of anonymity
