It was a five way race. The Democrat along with two others acted as a spoiler for the next strongest candidate who would've easily beaten LePage: Eliot Cutler, an Independent. LePage won 38%, and Cutler won 36%. The Democrat Libby Mitchell was a distant third at just 19%.
