The fact is it is far easier to kill someone with a gun than it is to kill them with a knife, knives require a person to get in close range which puts the victim in a much better position to defend themselves. Because knives are not as easy to kill with as guns are there is a smaller chance of a fatal attack, and because it is more difficult to pull off a would be attacker might be less likely to make the attempt in the first place because they do not have confidence that they can pull it off.
