(5,164 posts)I'm from Western PA. I know all too well that Football is the State religion and each school's Football team are treated as gods and people grovel before each School's football coach. When I lived in Ambridge PA, the biggest chunk of the school district budget was for the football team. The coach got privileges that mere teachers could only dream about. Never mind that the textbooks were out of date, supplies were always running short and the building was in disrepair! The town lived for football, and School Directors knew that if they didn't have a winning team, they'd lose their seat on the Board.
And the result of all that football worship? The whole area is economically dead. It's been dead ever since the steel industry died in 1984.
I also know Fred. He worked with my Dad in the Boilermakers Union. If Fred made a single move against anyone involved with the football team, he'd be recalled. That's a fact.
Fred deserves credit for appearing at the rally. Others in the same situation would hide.
