The talk of banning and criminalizing the purchase of the magazines has led to not so much unprecedented profit as record sales of a moderately cheap accessory.

Then again, all the talk of banning and criminalization is, ultimately, expression of a different kind of fear. In school the kids were terrified. They didn't know that was pretty much the first killing of school kids on that scale, nor did they know that typically the killing's done by mentally ill kids that attend the school. They just heard rumors, reinforced not so much by the horror of what happened but by the terror expressed that this kind of thing is rampant and might be repeated.

Every problem has a solution. When there's a crisis, we need to do something. Now. Immediately. We need a solution. Any solution.

However, every solution also has problems. In the crisis itself, we ignore that, or we decide that our solution is more important that the problems others suffer. And in a democracy, doesn't only the will of the 50% + 1 so that the will of the 50% - 1 is meaningless?
