In his first media appearance since the Friday press conference that drew outrage from gun control advocates, National Rifle Association vice president Wayne LaPierre once again made it clear Sunday on Meet The Press that the NRA is not going to change its hardline stance on gun regulations after the Newtown, Conn. shooting.
Not only did LaPeirre say there was no chance new gun control will pass in Congress, he made it clear he’s unfazed by the critics who attacked his press conference. “If it’s crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our schools to protect our children, then call me crazy,” LaPierre said.
It’s not only Democrats and progressives who balked in recent days at the NRA’s call for immediate Congressional action to put an armed police officer in every public school in the United States. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) rejected the idea and other Republicans have said the decision to should be left to local governments.
Following the Newtown, Conn. shooting, some pro-gun Democrats called on the NRA to come to the table as part of a holistic discussion about gun violence that includes examination of mental health and America’s “culture of violence” as well as gun control. LaPierre made it clear Sunday on NBC that’s not going to happen. He rejected talk of banning large-capacity magazines as well as spoke derisively about new plans for an assault weapons ban being drawn up by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
“I think that’s a phony piece of legislation and i do not think it will pass for this reason: it is all based on lies that have been found out,” LaPierre said.
