16. Good point...
I have very little faith in the political process anymore. They couldn't even get the Affordable Care Act through without compromising away TO OUR OWN PARTY WHEN WE HELD BOTH HOUSES! After this last election — with nothing even resembling a mandate from the masses one way or the other — I find it less likely now.
I'm waiting for it to be used as a pawn in the fiscal cliff negotiations. You know it's going to happen — we raise taxes on rich people over $5 million a year by 0.1 percent, gut Medicaid and leave the military-industrial complex alone; and the AWB isn't retroactive, bans only more than 3 "evil features," blocks only bigger than 20-round magazines and it overrides all state preemption like in New York and Connecticut. Oh, and then it gets shot down by the SCOTUS as a ban on a specific class of firearms and we are back where we started but fucked on social programs (including the mental health system that would help detect and treat these monsters BEFORE they pull the trigger).
I'm not going to talk about the actual AWB suggestion, just that, with this congress, there's a snowball's chance in Hell of anything happening that most on DU would agree with. Doesn't mean we can't try to get SOMETHING done, I just see it's an uphill fight, despite the recent wave of sentiment.
