7. I wish I could draw some optimism from this development but I can't.....

I would hope that maybe with Obama having a larger win than Nixon, Carter or Bush and with the Democrats increasing their outright majority was well as their likely caucus majority in the Senate and picking up seats in the House, the Republics would finally realize the time has come to govern. That means doing the hard work rather than just saying NO. It means sitting down and working across party lines to achieve compromise that moves the country forward. Maybe he personally really sees that. That would be refreshing.

But. I don't think he will be Speaker in the new Congress. I think this statement and the one that he is open to new revenue means that the hard right Teabaggers will all but kill him rather than re-elect him as Speaker. Just as there are some Republic strategists that say this election was a watershed in the changing demographics in this country and that the party must accept and adapt, there are just as many saying the reason they lost was because their candidate wasn't conservative enough, i.e. the party must move even further to the right.

Nice, but can he reign in what remains of the Tea Party Caucus? Cooley Hurd Nov 2012 #1
