18. JUST AS
I thought it would. I am Latina, independent and educated. I am 4th generation born in Arizona. My ONLY language was english until i took it upon myself to learn Spanish. I have an anglo maiden name, which tends to cause a look of confusion. (Common among older families along the border). I am a registered independent, but lean democrat. Much of my family is the same. (and its a BIG family).
None of us answered any polls. I saw several calls on my cell, but did not answer. I'm sure there are many more like me. I do not have time to answer polls, i'm busy WORKING, be it at my federal gov't job, or at home. BUT we ALL voted for Obama. I know only two people who voted Romney, one is Latino who is a staunch Repub, the other an African American woman who did it because she disliked Obama's "support of abortion and gay marriage". But I digress....
Not to stereotype, but we mind our business, often not answering the door, surveys in the mall, or telephone polls. To avoid waiting in line or being approached by anyone questioning my right to vote, I vote early. Mine was turned in and tabulated October 18. Knowing my own/my family and friend's similar behavior....
This is LIKELY why they underestimated us. And don't EVER be stupid enough to let us see you trying to keep other minorities from voting. Here in Tucson, our great-grandparents, grandparents and parents grew up alongside African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Basque, Spanish, Italian, German and Irish. We are different in Southern Arizona. We were taught not to draw lines, but embrace those around us. Our families all depended on each other. Latinos know we have the rights we do because of the Civil Rights Movement. Yes, Arizona went to Romney, but only because of the infusion of white people living in Maricopa County. Romney showed nothing, not his tax returns, not a budget to back up his ridiculous agenda, and zero respect for the middle class. His candidacy was a joke, his party is out of touch. To top it off, they tried to suppress voters.
In close, all they did was show their contempt for all minorities, women, LBGT's, 47%, military, elderly...
AND ALL WE DID WAS SHOW THEM THE DOOR.
