HCA Midwest Health System is negotiating to acquire St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs, the latest example of a national trend of consolidated hospital ownership.
The move from smaller, nonprofit and community hospitals to large, for-profit companies is growing across the country as hospitals position themselves to handle the demands of federal health care legislation.
Ascension Health, the nonprofit owner of Carondelet Health, which owns the two hospitals, said Tuesday that it is pursuing talks with HCA to buy the two hospitals and some other Carondelet subsidiaries in the Kansas City area.
The deal would add to HCA Midwest’s census of nine hospitals, five surgery centers and a psychiatric facility in the Kansas City area, rivaling the St. Luke’s Health System in number of facilities.
