Ruth Johnson ordered to attend hearing on citizenship ballot issue

Detroit A federal judge has denied Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's request to skip a court hearing Friday in a lawsuit over her controversial citizenship question on ballot applications.

That means Michigan's chief election officer will have to appear in a federal courtroom in Detroit and possibly defend her placement of a question inquiry about voters' citizenship status on ballot applications.

Johnson put the policy in place for the February presidential primary. She continued to require local clerks to include the question on ballot applications in the August primary, even after Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed legislation that would have made Johnson's policy a state law.

Johnson, a Republican, had asked U.S. District Court Judge Paul Borman to let her send state elections director Chris Thomas in her absence for the plaintiffs' request for a temporary restraining order to stop Johnson from placing the question on ballot applications.
