It's always been this bad, since Nixon and the "Southern Strategy," Reagan and the "Moral Majority," Gingrich and the first Tea Party-style insanity of 1994, which everyone forgets for some reason, Bush and the war on the world. They're getting more shrill and extremist because they know the long-term demographics (and the permanent disaster of an economy entirely for the rich) are going to do them in. Maybe you're thinking of Eisenhower?
