The George Wallace reference I regularly use is to the unreconstructed Wallace, because that's the one most folks outside of Alabama remember. I'm not even sure the bad old George Wallace was all that sincere, or was just playing the racial game that once bested him.
But these folks? Completely unreconstructed. If you go back and read what the segregation folks were writing back then about small government, states' rights, and communists everywhere, it's pretty much the same. They just can't say some things as loudly as they once did.
