The head of the group who writes the DSM criteria is set to modify autism in the next version because he says the current requirements are being interpreted too broadly and that is accounting for much of the increase in diagnosis. He also thinks that many of the children diagnosed as autistic are not really autistic but have symptoms that either go away over time or are a result of other disorders.

Having aspergers myself I'm not saying this is not important or something that needs to be addressed. I'm just saying that misdiagnosis is becoming more and more common as autism and aspergers become the go to disorders taking the place of the old go to's like ADHD and OCD.
