There's a really excellent book, titled "1861" by Adam Goodheart that builds up all the way to South Carolina firing on Fort Sumter. From the first grumbling of secession all the way to the first shot of the war, written wholly from primary sources.
No, this is certainly not "the" Fort Sumter moment. Frankly, owing to the lack of a geographical divide between ideologies these days, comparisons to the civil war of the 19th century are all going to fall pretty flat.
But in a more general sense, no; it would require an act of violence to light that spark. Not an act of shitty manners.
