what I find ironic here is the thing that woke him up to the Civil Rights movement in the late 50s and early 60s (he died in 1965) was the thought that there were vets who weren't able to vote in some states - that, as the saying goes, really frosted him.

If he were with us, he'd be going all Iwo Jima with you.
