8. Collinses, Goinses, Gibsons, all traceable along the NC/VA line moving westward into the mountains
Hey, this topic fascinates me for several reasons. My roots are in eastern NC but DNA evidence shows Collinses and Bunches who were neighbors of my ancestors there in the 18th are connected to those same families in western NC and ultimately the east Tennessee Melungeons. Goinses are traceable from Lumbee Country , southern NC, northwestwards towards the mountains, then all the way to Texas and Louisiana as "Redbones" and into Ohio as "Melungeon." Gibsons in the Carolinas move westward through the area where I live, Danville, called "Goinstown Indians" and become a "Core Melungeon" family in Tennessee. "Hancock County Melungeon" names are found here 200 miles east of Hancock County. This is definitely a regional, not a one-county, phenomenon.
