He didn't get to be anybody's ancestor because he joined the Union Army at age 16 to end slavery. The thugs withheld food and medical attention from a wounded and then a dying teenager. George somehow hung on for a couple of years, but then he died not long after the prisoner-of-war camp was liberated. Before dying, he managed to make this tiny brown tray, carving one last request: "Remember me."
I believe the worst stories that have come down from the Southern slave plantations. Because, frankly, with what they did to George, it all sounds like something they would do.
Of course, it would be wrong to forget that the slave system was just as bad in such very Northern states as New York.
