I do hope you aren't blaming yourself in any way whatsoever... a dog that quick and that determined is pretty much an unstoppable force. Even if you keep him from running out 99.9% of the time--a pretty high success rate by any standard--that 0.1% can end up breaking your heart.
And then to actually see your beloved dog get hit--I cannot imagine the horror. One thing that I hope might comfort you is to keep in mind that, while you are reliving that moment a million times and will keep reliving it for months or years, Bradley only went through it once. Just once. And then it was over. It is much, much, much harder for you than it was for him.
I don't know what to say about being afraid of your son's reaction. Can you call the police's non-emergency number and ask to have a patrol car drive by a few times tonight?
You have my absolute and heartfelt sympathy. I am so sorry for your loss.
