Homeless fellow on my street this morning [View all]

I live in a pretty nice spot, a bedroom community bordering Boston. Safe, quiet, reasonably prosperous.

This morning, for the first time ever, I saw a homeless person camped out on my street. I was in the car, running late, and a cop was parked nearby so I assumed that something reasonable was taking place (we have very good cops) and headed off into my day.

I have seen homelessness grow in my area, bit by bit. It started a few years ago, with homelessness becoming an issue the next town out from us. A year or so ago, I started seeing homeless folks just across the border in Boston during my frequent walks. Then in my town, in the hidden-away places on the periphery.

And now on my street.

So many are homeless now. So many more will be homeless soon.

I am reminded of FDR's first inaugural address:

"a host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence, and an equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.

Yet our distress comes from no failure of substance. We are stricken by no plague of locusts. Compared with the perils which our forefathers conquered because they believed and were not afraid, we have still much to be thankful for. Nature still offers her bounty and human efforts have multiplied it. Plenty is at our doorstep, but a generous use of it languishes in the very sight of the supply. Primarily this is because the rulers of the exchange of mankindís goods have failed, through their own stubbornness and their own incompetence, have admitted their failure, and abdicated. Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men...

They know only the rules of a generation of self-seekers. They have no vision, and when there is no vision the people perish."

And here we are.
