My coworker finally got his deductible back. The insurance company had paid all but the deductible and stayed on the guy until he coughed up the thousands of dollars of damage that he had caused.
My coworker noted that this is a good reason to carry collision insurance, so the insurance company's lawyers can handle the collection.

We used the Progressive Insurance Snapshot discount--my wife's discount was 25%

I'm not sure that the math behind opting for UIM in lieu of collision is good either.
