22. That still falls into the realm of training flights
If you're going to go bomb something in a B-2, you are not going to stage it in the forward area where terrorists can try to destroy it on the ground. The closest I'd want to be is Ramstein AFB, Germany...and some of the B-2 missions in the Iraq War were flown out of Missouri. Long training flights are required (they have simulators but there's also the need to get in a real plane for a certain number of hours every year.)
It's good for PR, the crews like doing it and it doesn't actually cost anything because the Air Force has to do the training anyway.
You want to get enraged about military spending? Start with us contracting out service support functions. Shrub knew he needed more infantrymen than he could get under endstrength considerations (there can only be a certain number of troops in the army, and Congress sets the number) to fight the war. He also knew if he asked for more troops he wouldn't get his war...so he did the old 'find every man who can carry a rifle and put him on the line' trick. It got a lot of our troops killed; in twenty years when we finally see the lessons of OIF, one will be "combat service support NCOs should not be retrained as infantry NCOs." But back to the real Atrocity: because our truck drivers and cooks were now on the line, KBR and DynCorp were offering $85,000 per year to go to Iraq and cook, drive or do laundry. When they were talking about Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal the RWNJs who'd never been in service and consequently knew everything about the army said it was going to destroy morale if there was the slightest suspicion of there being a gay guy in the company. Gee, it couldn't have hurt it any more than knowing the cooks in the mess hall were earning more than your colonel.
Then there's the F-35 you can't even see out of, the Littoral Combat Ship they can't make work, the Joint Tactical Radio you need a forklift to install...oh, trust me, if you made a list of the thousand worst ways the military wastes money, flying planes over sporting events would be about 985.
If you truly believe less government equals more freedom, ask the Somalis how free they feel.
