...let's remember all the times that George W. Bush used the "bully pulpit" to get whatever he wanted, even at the state level.

Obama has a lot of broad-based support across the nation for women's rights. Rolling up his sleeves and wandering into a few dens of vipers isn't going to hurt him any, and he just might coax some people out of the shadows. Howard Dean had a similar effect on me way back in 2003. It can't hurt.
