Sometimes one can attempt use appeals to people's prejudices in a constructive way.
No, the US has no official religion or religious philosophy. We all understand that.
McCain's audience here certainly doesn't agree with that, and would indeed assert that the US is a "Judeo Christian" country. These types of Bible bangers are quite familiar not only to the "stranger within thy gates" reference in the Ten Commandments, but with Old Testament laws in general on the subject of safe conduct of peaceful strangers, the right of sanctuary, etc.
I suppose one can just say to such an audience "Hey, you are full of shit" and end the conversation, but reminding them that there are themes within their own professed religious beliefs which conflict with their behavior is not a bad thing.
