44. I saw a VERY large pod about 500 miles off the coast in 1990

I was on a cruise from Hawaii to San Diego courtesy of the Navy.

The dolphins were intrigued by the ship. They tracked with us for about an hour, playing in the wake. I couldn't tell how many there were, but it was at least in the hundreds.
