THIS is why it was almost impossible to list only 4 that I literally picked 4 at random. Sarah Vaughn! (Swoon!) I always thought she had a male equal in Billy Eckstien. It's that sort of deep, resonant, "velvet" quality that is oh so rare. If you listen, you'll hear it in the Rene Fleming example I gave as well. Another performer with a unique voice and INCREDIBLE piano skills was Nina Simone. If you've never heard her rendition of "Little Girl Blue" you must. It's simply amazing. While singing the melody for "Little Girl Blue" her piano is playing "Good King Wenceslaus."
