(215 posts)Seattle Children's Hospital added a large new building in 2011. During construction, members of the local Iron Workers union wrote the first names of sick children on the beams being used, along with a "Hi".
Patients, or their parents, would write their first names on a piece of paper and tape it in their room's window. The iron workers would then add that child's name to the next beam placed.
The children were very excited watching for their name to go up, seeing it every day, knowing that strangers out their cared about them, and that their names would be there, on the beams, as long as the building stood. I got choked up when I saw the story on the local news, and saw the scores of names, bringing moments of happiness, brightening the day of a sick child, and those who love them.
