as an actual training simulator, as they would do for jet aircraft. The complex ones sound more like what I was thinking of.
I guess I'd have to know someone to be able to try that kind out

I lways do 8 and 4, it's more comfortable and my hand is closer to the shift.

I used to work with a guy who made a point of using his knees. He said it was useful at times.
