But they do that with everything.

The problems surrounding hemp all stem from criminalization. Hemp was legal and encouraged for thousands of years, the trouble only started when racists in the US decided to criminalize the intoxicant habits of the underclasses, as they saw it, privileging booze and tobacco (which were big business) over other, cheaper drugs, of which there are many.

And the effect, of course, has been to make the prohibited drugs big business too. Talk about unintended consequences.
