In reply to the discussion: Typical. "Two people injured in shooting at Raleigh gun show." [View all]maggiesfarmer
(297 posts)86. I did. Yes, the count is up to maybe 10 shootings at gun shows, some dating back 4 years.
I'm not reducing children's deaths at all, I'm only reinforcing the point that a single instance, no matter how heinous, or a dozen instances for that matter, doesn't qualify as "typical". We're talking less than 1% occurrence rate.
When Fox News or some other right wing outlet spins a story with a misleading headline, the DU community jumps all over it. I'd like to see us hold DU members to the same standards when we see thread titles inaccurately representing information.
No offense intended.

The gun went off as the owner was unzipping the case to show to the trained officer

Yes - should be "someone caused the gun to off". Guns don't "go off" by themselves.

Looks like they corrected a bit: hitting the woman in the side rather than the eye

"Avoid Amateurs with guns." Like the police officer who was checking guns at the door?

terrible story, but one data point doesn't suggest the trend implied by 'typical'

Yes, typical. I can go on like this forever. So-called gun people fucking up with their guns.

It's a damn shame this happened at a time when they're trying to show how responsible gun shows are.

It's in the same ranks as the negligent/accidental discharge of concealed carry incidents.

Speculation here, but hiring a cop to routinely check for a variety of empty weapons...
